Standard 4:

The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners.

Description:

My project demonstrates a Case Study on a student named Sammy. Throughout the case study it shows an action plan on how I as the teacher plan to help within an Academic, Behavioral, and Social plan for the student. Starting off the project displays the knowledge I already know about the student broken up into the three biggest struggles the student has. With the knowledge I already have I created an action plan with support ideas to help with growth and development for the student on going. Once going through the thinking process of creating an action plan my project then displays how I plan to have a conversation with the parents about how we can support Sammy. I created conversation topics on how I plan to lead the conversation and break the information down for the parent. The goal for this meeting is to agree on an action plan to help the student and what is best for the student. This conversation will be kept very professional and positive with targeted information on how to help support Sammy and lead him to growth.

Reflection:

My artifact demonstrates standard four though the teacher understandment of central concepts and tools to support the student and structure of disciplines. My artifact shows the tools to support a student because the teacher has an understanding of what the student struggles with and is creating an action plan to help the student. An example of this is seen in my artifact. The student is reading around 27 words per minute in first grade and when the student was kindergarten was reading 25 words per minute. The teacher is using tools of support within an action plan to help the student with fluency. Some support ideas for this can include decoding words and working on sound blends which support fluency. Another way my artifact supports this standard is the actions of the teacher supporting the student through the structure of disciplines. The student is struggling with controlling his behavior in the classroom environment, instead of being a reactive teacher it is important to understand where the students behavior is coming from. An example of this within my artifact is knowledge of the student being in a survival brain and having interactions with peers that can include screaming, throwing and pushing. To support the student to make sure these behaviors do not continue in the classroom environment can be using the zones of regulation, peace place and use of the guidance counselor. My artifact as well supports standard four though teaching and creating learning experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners. My artifact shows creating positive learning experiences through helping students with their needs and providing students with support. It as well shows aspects of using discipline in positive effect ways. Instead of being a reactive teacher it is important to use support and effective ways to help students with growth and development. My artifact supports standard four and the important ways to create meaningful support for students.
