Standard 3-

The teacher works with learners to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, encouraging positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self motivation.

Description-

My artifact that I have chosen is case study. This case study is about a 2nd grade teacher named Miss.English. It’s her sixth day of the new school year. She stated that she introduced some procedures into her classroom, however many of the students seemed to forget the procedures by the sixth day. As the morning begins at the ring of the bell, the students are supposed to sit down and eat breakfast then transition to the rug for morning meeting. The students sat down to eat and they created a mess with their breakfast. After this they proceeded to rolling around on the rug for the morning meeting. This caused a lot of frustration for Miss English. Next, Miss English wanted to begin her lesson however, the students faced confusion and were not sure what to do for their groups for their first block of reading, leading the students to ask questions and announce their confusion. This resulted in Miss English getting frustrated ignoring her students then escalating her anger and yelling at them. For our case study we had to correct the errors Miss. English made in her classroom. This supports learning standard 3 due to learning standard three focuses on how the teacher works alongside students. Standard three states the teacher works with the students to create a positive environment to support the students. This goes along with my artifact because the Miss. English does not create a positive learning environment for the students. She could have gone about the students actions in a different way instead she resorted to yelling which put up barriers between her and the students. This will make the students not want to come back to her classroom or feel that they can get to her with anything needing support or a simple question about school. Standard three as well encourages collaborative learning, encouraging positive social interaction, active engagement in learning and self motivation. My artifact supports this because after reflecting on what Miss. English doesn’t not encourage her classroom. I wrote about how important it is to be a proactive teacher. Miss. English has not provided positive social interaction. She is a teacher that wants full control of the classroom and does not work alongside her students, for a better outcome she has to follow standard three to provide a better support system in her classroom. It is important  to encourage collaborative learning, encouraging positive social interaction, active engagement in learning and self motivation. These are all things that will support a learning brain. Miss. English might be sending her students into a different mindset with her actions. Overall to have a positive classroom environment to support her expectations she needs to make them with the students and give them time to learn what they are expecting like writing them down for the students.

Reflection-

What I learned from working with standard three and my artifact is the importance of building a classroom culture. This has explained my knowledge on becoming a better teacher because students will not be able to learn or want to come into the classroom if they do not no feel included. It is important for teachers to be a positive role model in a student’s life. Using positive reinforcements when products are done correctly and reinforce the incorrect ones. This as well makes me reflect on our trauma class because teachers can help or hurt students and as a future educator I want to be a support system for my students. We want to build students up by yelling at them. It may lead to more behaviors that we do not expect in a classroom environment. The student will end up losing trust, not wanting to attend school and lead to more misbehaving. Words have an impactful meaning and instead of yelling we can redirect students, reinforce and remind students though language building through standard three.
