Standard 2:
In learning environments the teacher will create a safe, engaging, professional learning environment and appropriately intervene with bad behavior and calmly and effectively diffuse the situation and get the students back on track.
Artifact Description:
The artifact I believe best fits this standard is the assignment called, “There Is A Time And Place For Everything”. This assignment is a slideshow about a student named Dylan. Dylan is a kindergarten student who loves sports and loves to talk about sports. He is working on skills to talk about sports during a certain time in the classroom.
Connection to Standard:
This artifact about Dylan’s situation greatly supports this standard because Dylan often interrupts class time and talks about sports to the other students which distracts them and takes their attention away from the lesson. The teacher accurately follows standard two and does precisely what standard two entails. The teacher diffuses the situation and comes up with a way to keep Dylan on task and limit his interruptions. The teacher follows this by stating that “sports time” is the time to talk about sports and when it’s not “sports time” it is time to stay on task engaged in our classroom assignment. The teacher also does a great job maintaining to include Dylan in the class while controlling his outbursts by intervening with the situation in a calm manner and getting the students back on track like stated in standard 2. This is shown by not telling Dylan to leave the room or yelling at him to stay quiet. The teacher has a protocol and behavior management system in place so Dylan knows when it is time to talk about sports. As well she does not put the student down from talking about sports, the teacher encourages it during “sports time” not while in dissections where it can distract Dylan and other students within the class. This is creating a safe environment and demonstrating standard 2 through bringing the student back on track through a behavior management system. I admire how this teacher went about dealing with the situation at hand by being a proactive teacher, and being able to maintain a proper inclusion classroom though supporting each student’s needs while at the same time diffusing the situation and getting control.
Reflection and Connection to career:
This standard very well supports the artifact I chose. As stated previously, Dylan struggles with regulation and lacks the knowledge of knowing when it is the right time to talk and when it is work time. The teacher grasped the situation at hand and efficiently reached a solution that follows standard two. I hope to handle situations in a similar manner as it is most important to educate my students and maintain a healthy and safe educational environment. It is important to have a behavior management system in place within the classroom to provide each needs to the student. Being a proactive teacher means identifying and meeting the individual learning needs of the student and wants them to reach their goals by supporting the students and encouragement with positive reinforcement. Understanding the students interests will provide the students to have learning opportunities while engaging while supporting their social, emotional and academic needs. This standard connects to my future career because I want to be a proactive teacher that supports students’ needs in all settings in the classroom environment. Having a behavioral management system in place will be able to provide the student with their needs as well as having expectations for the students.
